What is ORCID?

ORCID is a nonprofit organization helping create a world in which all who participate in research, scholarship and innovation are uniquely identified and connected to their contributions and affiliations, across disciplines, borders, and time.

• ORCID iD = Open Researcher and Contributor ID
• ORCID iD provides a persistent digital identifier that distinguishes researchers and, through integration in key research workflows such as manuscript and grant submission, supports automated linkages between a researcher and his professional activities.
• ORCID iD is an https URI with a 16-digit number. e.g. https://orcid.org/0000-0001-2345-6789

• For Universities and Research institutions ORCID can reduce the time-consuming process of maintaining up-to-date records, and provides a validation step with updates from trusted sources.
• Funding  agencies including  professional and scholarly associations can use ORCID in building a trusted research information infrastructure by asserting connections between individuals and the grants awarded to them.
• ORCID can be linked to other researcher identifiers like Scopus ID and information can  be synchronised between the ids
• ORCID can be used in repository systems to clearly link authors—and all their name variants—with their research work, improving search and retrieval to support networking and collaboration
• For publishers ORCID can streamline the manuscript submission processes, improve the management of author and reviewer databases.

NTU is requesting NTU faculty members to authorize NTU to collect and use their ORCID iD and their ORCID record data for NTU research systems.

Singapore Funders require ORCID iDs during grant applications. They are moving towards relying on information in ORCID records for grant application processing​.

Hence, make sure your ORCID records are ready and optimised. 

• Solves researcher name ambiguity by creating a persistent unique identifier 
• Serves as a linking mechanism between research objects such as books, articles, posters and data sets
• Is free and available to any researcher in any career phase
• Improves the recognition and discoverability of their research
• Transcends disciplines as well as geographic, national and institutional boundaries
• Enables use of Wizards to quickly import your work 
• Is required by an increasing number of funders and publishers
• ORCID record can be used as Curriculum Vitae
