Guide to 3MT

This is a guide to assist students who are preparing to compete in the 3MT competitions.

Who is eligble to compete?

In NTU, all postgraduates are eligible to participate in the 3MT competition. 

You may wish to check with your school representative for more information and how to sign up for the competition.

Judging criteria

Each participant will be assessed by the judges on few guidelines.

Here is an overview of the judging criteria:

  1. Did the presenter provide an understanding of the background to the research question being addressed and its significance.
  2. Did the presenter clearly describe the key results of the research including conclusions and outcomes?
  3. Was the thesis topic, key results, research significance and outcomes communicated in language appropriate to a non-specialist audience?
  4. Did the presenter avoid scientific jargon, explain terminology and provide adequate background information to illustrate points?
  5. Did the presenter spend adequate time on each element of their presentation?
  6. Did the present maintain eye contact with audience?
  7. Did the presenter have sufficient stage presence and vocal range; maintain a steady pace, and have a confident stance?
  8. Did the PowerPoint slide enhance the presentation - was it clear, legible, and concise?
  9. On a scale of 1 to 10 with 10 being the highest, please rate the presenter's overall presentation.

Rules and regulations

Participants will have to follow in accordance to these rules and regulations for their 3MT competition:

  • A single static PowerPoint slide is permitted. No slide transitions, animations or ‘movement’ of any description are allowed. The slide is to be presented from the beginning of the oration.
  • No additional electronic media (e.g. sound and video files) are permitted.
  • No additional props (e.g. costumes, musical instruments, laboratory equipment) are permitted.
  • Presentations are limited to 3 minutes maximum and competitors exceeding 3 minutes are disqualified.
  • Presentations are to be spoken word (e.g. no poems, raps or songs).
  • Presentations are to commence from the stage.
  • Presentations are considered to have commenced when a presenter starts their presentation through either movement or speech
  • Slido will commenced immediately once the presenter starts their presentation (Applicable for Slido only)
