Staff Profile: Rebecca Lavanie David

Senior Medical Librarian

Introduction

Rebecca David is a manager at the Medical Library from Nanyang Technological University, Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine (LKCMedicine). Her key responsibilities include managing information literacy programmes, education research, and grants for the Medical Library at LKCMedicine. Rebecca collaborates and works closely with faculty members at LKCMedicine to facilitate Team-Based Learning (TBL) sessions and outreach Continuing Medical Education (CME) courses for healthcare professionals. She spearheads Student Consultation Services (SCS) for LKCMedicine students who pursue scientific/education research projects. Rebecca also promotes scholarship efforts through publications to align with the educational goals of the University and user needs. She won the best presenter award at the 2020 International Conference on Higher Education, Research and Knowledge (ICHERK).

Professional Experience, Specialisation & Memberships

Ms Rebecca Lavanie David dedicated almost 10 years of her teaching career at the Ministry of Education, Singapore. Apart from teaching, she was also the head of innovation and enterprise and moderator for national exams. Rebecca David also received her long service award from MOE. Thereafter, in 2010 she pursued a Masters in Education and graduated from the University of Adelaide.

Rebecca pursued a career as a Senior Educator at KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital and worked closely with a diverse range of departments, disciplines, and institutions to enhance educational outcomes. Her key responsibilities included curriculum development, education research, and faculty training. In 2013, Rebecca worked with the educational lead at KKH and developed a new training and learning framework and curriculum materials for a preparatory course conducted by the Department of Pediatrics at KKH that incorporated applicable educational theories and adult-learning (andragogy) principles to enhance the learning needs of medical residents' and prepare them to meet the Membership of the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health (MRCPCH) examination standards. Due to her diverse role, Rebecca also facilitated an Interprofessional Education (IPE) approach and organized a Venus Thrombosis (VTE) conference in 2015 together with a senior consultant from obstetrics and gynecology, Allied Health Professionals and pharmacists from KKH. Rebecca also actively worked with educators across Duke-NUS medical school and SingHeath to enhance faculty development programmes designed for healthcare professionals. 

She developed a passion for information literacy and education research in academic medicine which led her to pursue a career at the Medical Library, LKCMedicine. Rebecca spearheads the information literacy programmes at the Medical Library for users ranging from teaching, learning and research communities to enhance learning and development areas in relation to information, research, and academic literacies. One of her key roles involves facilitating SCS and information literacy training at briefing sessions for year 4 students at LKCMedicine who pursue scholarly research projects. As Rebecca manages grants and education research, she ran an 18-month NTU EdeX collaborated research study which led to the development of a newly customised five-year information literacy framework for LKCMedicine students. Due to the scholarship efforts of the EdeX grant, Rebecca also works with the curriculum evaluation team at LKCMedicine and successfully embedded information literacy into selected TBL modules of the MBBS curriculum. Apart from student services, Rebecca collaborates with faculty to outreach CME courses for healthcare professionals to enhance their information literacy skills in Medicine. Rebecca is also involved in publication works and presents at library/library-education conferences.

Rebecca also works across at NTU library with the Advisory & Consultation team. As of 2020, she is a member of the Library User Education Review panel and the Sustainable Library Committee. Rebecca also oversees the Course Reserves project for LKCMedicine users together with the A&C project team.
